Lecture 2:

Modelling and simulation of the lead up and onset (pathogenesis) of Parkinson’s disease

Peter Wellstead
(Professor (Emeritus) National University of Ireland, Maynooth and Manchester University, UK.)

Using the brain energy metabolism model to create ‘virtual human cohorts’ for ‘in-silico’ analysis of early-stage Parkinsonian risk factors. Extending the BEM Model by adding the neurochemical mechanisms associated with neural failure in Parkinson’s disease. This creates a Parkinson’s Simulation Model with the cellular functions for the production and disposal of:
                  Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and
                  The protein Alphasynuclein (αSYN)

Using the Parkinson’s Simulation Model to simulate the pathogenic environment and reveal a switch-like transition from a healthy neuron to the Parkinsonian disease state during in-silico simulation. The switch-like transition as a bi-stable systems theory for the pathogenesis of Parkinson’s disease.
